Facebook Tips and Tricks

If you do not know the basics of Facebook, please become acquainted with the site and ask an intern or Caleb for help. Facebook is one of the greatest tools we have and it is free. There is no reason that we all should not be utilizing it.

Basic Features
1. Comment
  • This feature allows you to share your thoughts and opinions through others' posted content. For example, someone posts something about one of our interns in Bolivia and we want to direct the individuals who are reading the content to information about our expeditions in Bolivia.
  • How To: Below any content, status update, posted item, etc. there is small, blue lettering that reads "Comment". Click "Comment" and type the information you want to share. After your text box is full of the information you want to post click the blue "comment" button.

2. Like

  • This feature allows you to show your interest in any given content on Facebook.
  • How To: Below any posted item of Facebook there is text that says "like". Simply click this button and it will automatically show that you like the given item.
3. Share
  • Another feature on Facebook allows you to post content on your wall from all over the web. You can promote important content, our partners and other organizations.
  • How To: Below content on Facebook (normally links and video) there will be small blue text that reads "share". Click this link and a dialog box will appear. You will have the option to either post on your wall or to share with friends. By choosing to post, you will share the information with everyone. Type the information in the box that you want to share. Add links such as Donate to Ascend at: http://ascendalliance.org/donate.htm, etc. Then click the big blue "share" button and the content will be posted to your wall or sent to your friends.

Useful Tricks

1. Attaching friends to content by using the @ symbol.

  • This feature allows you to attach a limited number of specific friends to a given posting or status. It does not work with comments. This can be utilized to point out specific things that individuals have done. i.e. Our new interns in Peru XX and XX just posted a video blog! Check it out here: http://www.ascendalliance.org/.
  • How To: In most content, while you're typing in information, press the @ symbol and begin typing your friend's full name. Finish by clicking on your friend in the dialog box that pops up below the text. Continue your text or add more friends by adding a space and starting again with the @ symbol.

2. Adding Emotions

  • When posting or commenting, you can add smiley faces, etc.
  • How To: Simply type in one of the short cuts (see below) of the emotion you want to add.

smile :-) :) :] =)

Do's and Dont's

  • Data has shown that the most consistently shared words on facebook are (starting with the most shared)

  • The following are the least shared words on facebook
VS
Apps

Google
2. Diversify content posting
  • Make sure you are aware of what content others have already posted
  • Diversify the content you post, promote partners, use videos (work safe and not edgy).
  • Post news about our countries, our projects, our blogs, our staff, anything and everything Ascend related.
  • Link our content to others by using the @ feature as explained above.
3. Try to spend at least 1 hour promoting Ascend on Facebook per week
  • Please take a few extra minutes of your time and suggest all of your friends to Ascend and Ascend's Fan Page. This is our best way to gain popularity and it is free.
  • Log in Daily to see what's happening
  • Post information on how to donate, expeditions, news, intern blogs and updates, in-country happenings, gala info, etc.
  • If you are talking about Ascend, use the @ feature to link readers to our page.

  • Negative media about other people or organizations
  • Bad news

Prototype for Future Expedition Participants

Dear xxxx,

Xxxx(Thank you for your interest in an expedition.)xxxxx...

An expedition is a life changing intercultural adventure, as well as an experience full of memories that will last a lifetime. We offer many ways in which you can help, and we would love to find out how you can contribute to our mission. Your passion really makes a difference in the world and helps others to ascend out of poverty.

Participants fund their own way, and there are many ways to raise the money needed to go on an expedition. One of the most successful ways to raise money is to get donations from close contacts, friends, family, and local businesses. Other ways of raising money are hosting events like:

- Walk-a-thon

- Benefit Concert

- Car Washes

- Garage Sale

If you are interested in helping those in need please let me know. Also, please send me a resume and the time frame in which you would be able to go.

Thanks,

- Meet everybody, even the boss...
- Decide where your spot will be
- Learn how to answer the phone...trickier than it sounds, read this

6) Sign Intern Contract

You're capable, and now you know about Net Docs. Click here, download and update this file with your name, the duration of your internship and any other pertinent details, print a copy, sign and submit it to Caleb Braley, or scan and email to caleb@ascendalliance.org.

7) Sign Staff Procedure Manual

This is the most fun part. You might be starting to detect a pattern here, but it is on Net Docs, here. Sign the verification of reading on the last page, hold on to a copy for yourself and submit the other to our Accountant, Drake Shattuck. He'll create a Quickbooks login for you, so we can track your hours.

8) Formalize Schedule

You will need to formalize your schedule and send an email to Caleb Braley and Rocio Martinez listing your regularly scheduled hours: caleb@ascendalliance.org/rocio@ascendalliance.org

9) Write your own Linkedin Recommendation

Don't know what Linkedin is? Google it. Write an average length recom

mendation that you hope to live up to during your internship. If you do indeed live up to it, I will take the time to write a nice, personal recommendation that reflects your character and strengths.

Write an email to Caleb containing your personal recommendation. Save and make a copy for yourself.

10) Verification

Print out a copy of this Knowledge Base entry, check off all 10 things once they are done, sign the bottom and submit to Caleb Braley.

Ok, you're done. Find your supervisor and get yourself some assignments if

you're not swamped already.

Words of wisdom: Your internship is what you make it. Communication and dedication are the keys to success. If you have issues, communicate them directly to your superior. If you apply yourself and become a visionary, who knows where you could go.

Overview

Welcome to the Ascend Headquarters Knowledge Base. This is a living, growing information resource that is designed to help all staff become oriented, problem solve, troubleshoot and follow procedures.

A few initial guidelines:

- if you don't understand, ask someone

When creating a new entry:

- name it something simple and obvious: How to clean the refrigerator

- when finished, please notify caleb@ascendalliance.org

- consult your supervisor before deleting or editing previous entries

- keep it short and simple. Knowledge base is not about your feelings

- before creating a new entry, be certain that it does not already exist
